Head of the Presidential Working Unit for Development Supervision and Control
After completing his five-year term as Director of the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency in 2009, Dr. Ir. Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, returned to the Palace. SBY, when elected for the second term, appointed him to head a strategic unit called the Presidential Work Unit for Development Monitoring and Control. The former Minister of Mines and Energy was asked to draw up a five-year development plan for the president for the country’s development toward 2014.
Dr. Kuntoro has a distinguished track record in government and academia with an in-depth understanding of international regulations and practices in relation to development and economic growth.
Dr Kuntoro is a respected energy resource and business management expert. He received his both Bachelor and Doctoral Degrees in Industrial Engineering – Decision Science from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and a Masters from Stanford University, USA. He is also an Associate Professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and founded the School of Business and Management at ITB in 2003.
He has also held a number of senior management positions in Indonesia’s state-enterprise sector and government. In 1989 he saved PT Tambang Timah Tbk from bankruptcy. He left the company in 1994 to become Director General of Mines, before eventually being appointed as Minister of Mines & Energy in 1998.
Kuntoro has always believed that integrity, simplicity and asceticism, are central to his set of values. In his recent interview with the Jakarta Post, commenting on his minister’s car, a Toyota Crown:  “We should live according to what we need. We should not see cars as a symbol of achievement. A car is for getting around.”
