Overview
The coastal region of Pekalongan faces severe impacts from climate change and environmental degradation, threatening economic sustainability and community well-being, especially for groups vulnerable to disasters. Key challenges such as seawater intrusion, coastal erosion, and the decline of coastal ecosystem quality have led to decreased fisheries productivity and worsened the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities. As a strategic effort to address these issues, the Wanamina (Silvofishery) cultivation program has been developed using an integrative approach that combines mangrove ecosystem conservation with sustainable fisheries practices. This program not only maintains ecological balance but also enhances community well-being through the diversification of ecologically-based fisheries enterprises.
In its implementation, the silvofishery program in Pekalongan City has achieved several key milestones, including conducting an initial assessment in eight Adaptation Fund (AF) assisted urban villages as a basis for planning, establishing a demonstration plot in Krapyak Village as an educational hub for fish farmers, and developing training modules to enhance the capacity of aquaculture groups.
Objective
However, several challenges still need to be addressed to ensure the program runs optimally and sustainably. These include the absence of a Business Model Canvas (BMC), which hampers business development direction, weak assistance and evaluation systems, and limited integration of the program into regional development planning.
To overcome these issues, improvements are necessary, such as additional consultancy support, the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for silvofishery management, technical training in aquaculture, and the strengthening of monitoring and evaluation systems. With a more structured approach and stronger collaboration, the silvofishery program in Pekalongan is expected to become a successful model for sustainable ecosystem-based fisheries management while also enhancing the coastal community’s capacity to adapt to climate change.
